Dog trainer certifications explained

Singapore owners encounter a mix of credential labels — AVS-ACDT, IAABC, CCPDT and others. They are related but not interchangeable. This guide explains the difference so you can verify what a credential actually means before booking through our directory.
AVS-ACDT accreditation
AVS-Accredited Certified Dog Trainer (ACDT) is a status on the official AVS ACDT list. It indicates the trainer meets AVS requirements, including holding recognised professional certifications that must remain valid. Read AVS-ACDT explained and browse AVS-accredited trainers.
Important: AVS-ACDT is accreditation, not the same thing as an IAABC or CCPDT certificate.
Professional certifications (IAABC, CCPDT)
Independent organisations issue professional certifications based on education, experience and examinations. Common credentials in this directory include:
- IAABC — International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants
- CCPDT — Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers
Each body maintains its own renewal and continuing education rules. Verify directly with the issuer for current validity.
How dogtraining.sg labels credentials
We visually and editorially separate accreditation from professional certification. Additional courses or memberships supplied by trainers are labelled separately and are not assumed to be AVS-recognised. See our methodology and certification hub.
Becoming certified yourself
Aspiring trainers should start with the official AVS source and certifying bodies — read how to become a certified dog trainer in Singapore.
Using credentials when choosing a trainer
Credentials are one input alongside experience with your goal (puppies, reactivity, barking), methods transparency, and communication. Use how to choose a trainer.
Independent directory notice
dogtraining.sg is not operated by AVS. Listing here is not an AVS endorsement of this website or any trainer. Always verify accreditation on the official AVS page before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Is AVS-ACDT a certification?
AVS-ACDT is best understood as an accreditation status administered by AVS, dependent on recognised professional certifications remaining valid. IAABC and CCPDT credentials are independent professional certifications.
Does a certification guarantee good training outcomes?
No credential guarantees outcomes. Certifications indicate education, assessment and continuing requirements — one signal to combine with experience, methods transparency and fit for your case.
Where do I verify AVS-ACDT status?
Use the official AVS ACDT page. dogtraining.sg imports that list but is an independent directory — always verify current accreditation on the official source.
